The Patara Antique City Ancient Patara
Ancient Patara is 17 km almost due West of Kalkan, near the long beach at the South end of the Seven Capes. In antiquity, The Patara Antique City possessed an excellent harbor, which today is filled by sand. The town was known in classical times as the home of the oracle of Apollo, one nearly as important as that of Delphi. Ancient Patara’s history was typical of most Lycian cities controlled by Alexander the Great then the Egyptians and Syrians. Under Roman rule, the town experienced a renaissance, then slowly declined in the medieval era.

Under Roman rule, the town experienced a renaissance, then slowly declined in the medieval era. The Patara Antique City is also known as the birthplace of St. Nicholas.
Today, visitors can view its hillside theater, portions of which are covered with shifting sand dunes. The ancient harbor is now a marshy area. Nearby are the ruins of a lighthouse, and the sandy beach. Other ruins include a triumphal arch with three gates, baths, basilica, temple, huge granary, and a necroplis with tombs.
