The Blue Mosque was built on the remains of the Great Palace, which is believed to have been constructed between the 4th and 6th centuries. Mosaic coverings which are presumed to have been taken from the halls or roads of this palace were discovered in the 1930s. The Mosaic Museum located in the Arasta Bazaar within the Sultanahmet Complex, was redecorated so as to display these restored mosaics. The mosaics illustrate common activities, such as hunting and daily chores, and decorative designs, both of which are exquisite examples of the delicate artisanship that stand above the period during which they were produced. The Byzantines, who paid special interest to the mosaic art as the historical successor of the Hellenistic and Roman artistic traditions, supported mosaic artists who came from all parts of the empire. These artists produced mosaics in a very realistic artistic style by using various kinds of marble and precious stones. Following the discovery of the aforementioned mosaics, other mosaics found in other sections of the city were brought to this museum to be put on display.
The most frequently used designs of the mosaics are hunting and mythological scenes, games, wild animal pictures and daily events.
