Fish Lake is rumored that, when Prophet Abraham started to spread the idea about existence of only a single God among people who worship the Ruler Nimrod and different idols, Nimrod threw Prophet Abraham from the hill, where Urfa Fortress located now, into the fire. In the place where the prophet fell fire turned into water and woods turned into fishes.

Nimrod’s daughter was one of the followers of the prophet and could not stand the sorrow, and jumped after Prophet Abraham. In the place where she fell Lake of Ayn-ı Zeliha was formed. Carp fishes living in here and in the canals in the city centre are still considered to be sacred. Halilur Rahman Mosque located next to the lake was built during the Eyyubi Era in place of the Virgin Mary Church. As indicated in the epigraph of the mosque, this mosque which was built in 1211, the Finny Lake, religious school and graveyard form a complex of facilities adjacent to the mosque. Rizvaniye Mosque, located on the other side of the lake, was built by Rizvan Ahmet Pahsa in 1716 to replace St. Thomas Church which was built during the Byzantium Era. Ulu Mosque is one of the places during the belief tourism. Ulu Mosque is located in city centre and used to be a synagogue. Bishop Rabula turned the synagogue into St. Stephen Church. Construction of the mosque by Nurettin Zengi in its place started in 1170 and lasted five years. Ulu Mosque has a very nice architecture. In addition to the minaret which was formerly used as a belfry, there are 14 arches with access to the patio. Ulu Mosque is necessary to remember that this style was used for the first time in Sanliurfa.
