The Aspendos Antique City is 47km East of Anlalya, up the valley of the Koprucayi river. The Aspendos Antique City is known for its splendidly preserved Roman theater. A flourishing Pamphylian river port from the 5th century BC or earlier. The Aspendos Antique City was a wealthy center of trade, fanning, horse and cattle breeding, and silk weaving. The town fell to Alexander the Great, and later to the Romans in 133AD.

A flourishing Pamphylian river port from the 5th century BC or earlier. The Aspendos Antique City was a wealthy center of trade, fanning, horse and cattle breeding, and silk weaving. The town fell to Alexander the Great, and later to the Romans in 133AD. During Roman rule, most of the large buildings were constructed. Even after the city's later decline, the Selcuks renovated the theater, which was further restored under Ataturk centuries later.

Archaeologists consider this the finest example of a Roman theater in the whole of Turkey. Built in the 2nd century AD. The ancient theater could hold 15.000 spectators. The ancient theater typifies the difference between Greek and Roman theaters, the former being open beyond the stage; the latter's stage being enclosed by an interior wall that served as a backdrop. Other ruins include an aqueduct, basilica, market-hall, stadium, agora, fountain, and tombs.

If you're in Antalya at the time of its summer arts festival, try to attend one of the plays or wrestling matches presented in the Aspendos Theater. These performances draw thousands of spectators, and crowd-watching is just as much fun as the performance. The performances include classical Greek dramas in Turkish, which demonstrate the ancient theater's fine acoustics.
